More Power

IBM has never served up bigger helpings of POWER than with the new i Series systems. We have replaced 170’s through first generation 520’s with the new 515’s, M15’s, M25’s and 525’s and every time the response is WOW!

We replaced a 170 with an M15 for one company. Their MRP run went from an hour and forty five minutes on the 170 to three minutes and thirty seconds on the M15. That’s thirty times faster than the previous system. Similarly we replaced a small 270 with a 515 and the average batch job ran 20 times faster. Month ends that use to take a day or more are finished now in just a couple of hours.

If you are sitting with a smaller system right now and are considering one of the newer models you will want at least 4 disk drives (140GB 15K RPM) in a RAID 5 setup. This will give you about 420GB and you’ll still have bays to add another 2 drives or 280GB for a total of approximately 700GB. 4GB of Main Storage (RAM Memory) should be considered minimum but 8GB will really help to extract the most out of the processor or processors in some cases.

These base units come with DAT tape drives which are generally too small for most of you. The LTO 4 tape drive (1600GB and smoking fast) is the way to go. The upgrade to the LTO is not cheap but you will quickly recover the difference. First you will be buying fewer tapes and second in the time you’ll save when doing any kind of system work were a backup (or 2) is required. Most daily backups are down to 20 or 30 minutes and Entire System save are only taking 30 to 45 minutes.

This new generation of servers are sure to put a smile on your face and drive productivity to new heights.
